Beth says: "
This charming antique sampler came to me from England. Other than her name and year, Charlotte didn’t leave enough clues to positively identify her via my usual research channels. She must have had a special connection with the ocean, because of the two prominent seashells featured beside her name, but whether she lived there, or only wanted to commemorate a vacation by the sea, I cannot tell. She stitched her sampler with a mixture of silk, wool, and cotton threads on a somewhat coarse linen, and made enough counting errors that I suspect she was young when she worked her masterpiece. The colors have remained very bright, but the black thread has bled out into the surrounding linen in several places. This really doesn’t bother me one bit though, as I love seeing the evidence of age on my antiques."
